Publish date: 2024-07-31

Ever since The CW announced that the beloved animated show The Powerpuff Girls was getting a live-action reboot series, fans have been waiting to get a first glimpse of the project.

Earlier this week, TMZ shared an exclusive first look at Dove Cameron (Blossom), Chloe Bennett (Bubbles), and Yana Perrault (Buttercup) on set filming the pilot episode. Donald Faison, who will play Professor Utonium, was spotted on set as well.

After the photos were released, many fans were not too pleased with the costume design for the upcoming series. The main cast members were dressed in costumes that were very similar to the uniforms worn in the animated series, without much added detail or stylistic choice.

However, the wardrobe design didn’t invoke a negative response from everyone on social media. Some came to the show’s defense, stating that the costumes might be a flashback to the original cartoon.

So far, we don’t know what the wardrobe will look like for the rest of the show. While some may not like the designs, it is possible that that the costumes will change as the show progresses.

The CW has only ordered a pilot episode for the upcoming series, which means the reboot has not been picked up for a full season.

The live-action series will center around the Powerpuff Girls as "disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime-fighting."  The show will be written by Diablo Cody and Heather Regnier. The series director will be Maggie Kiley.

The show also spawned another reboot that ran for three seasons on the same network, but didn't do as well as the original.

Created by McCracken, the original animated show aired on Cartoon Network from 1998 to 2005. It was wildly popular, especially with young girls, most of whom are in their twenties or early thirties now.

It seems that The CW was trying to hook that audience using the same interest they garnered with Riverdale, an edgy retelling of the stories from Archie comics. It seems, however, that fans of the original Powerpuff Girls didn't want to see their beloved superhero sisters face such hardship.

A release date for The Powerpuff Girls live-action series has yet to be announced.
